Selena Gomez replies to Eugenio Derbez over his remarks
In response to Eugenio Derbez's critique of the actress's performance in Emilia Pérez, Selena Gomez clapped back. Now, the singer is answering his remarks.
The actor-producer expressed his criticism of Gomez's use of Spanish in the film during a future Hablando de Cine podcast, pointing out that she was not fluent in the language. The actress played Jessi del Monte in Jacques Audiard's musical criminal thriller.
He said, “Spanish is neither her primary nor secondary language nor fifth. And that’s why I feel she doesn’t know what she is saying, and if she doesn’t know what she’s saying, she can’t give her acting any nuance. … And that is why her performance is not only unconvincing but uncomfortable.”
Selena Gomez left a remark on the video after a TikTok video of the interview was uploaded and captured her interest, “I understand where you are coming from. I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.”

She also added, “Also do not ever say my fans are the problem standing up, as you say, for me.”
