Smriti Mandhana reached a new milestone on Wednesday, becoming the first woman cricketer to hit four ODI centuries in a single calendar year. She achieved this during the third and final ODI against Australia at Perth’s WACA Stadium.
Mandhana displayed her trademark blend of patience and aggression, bringing up her fifty in 50 balls before reaching her century in 103 deliveries. Her innings, featuring 14 boundaries and a six, followed three previous centuries this year—two against South Africa in June and one against New Zealand in October. This performance set a new benchmark in women’s ODIs, surpassing the earlier record of three centuries in a year, a feat achieved by seven players, including Laura Wolvaardt, Meg Lanning, and Nat Sciver-Brunt.
Despite her heroics, India fell short, losing to Australia by 83 runs. With this latest knock, Mandhana’s tally of ODI centuries now stands at nine, placing her alongside prominent players like Charlotte Edwards and Chamari Athapaththu. She is just one century away from equaling Tammy Beaumont’s record of 10 ODI tons and six away from catching Meg Lanning’s all-time high of 15.
Mandhana’s consistent performances underscore her growing stature in international cricket and her pivotal role in shaping the future of women’s cricket globally.
