India’s 18-year-old chess prodigy, D Gukesh, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. In a thrilling final against China’s Ding Liren, Gukesh clinched victory in the decisive Game 14, finishing with a score of 7.5-6.5.
This win makes Gukesh the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to claim the world chess crown. He also broke Garry Kasparov’s long-standing record as the youngest undisputed champion in classical chess.
The championship match was evenly balanced at 6.5 points each before the final game. Gukesh’s steady tactics and relentless focus led to a critical mistake by Ding on the 53rd move, sealing the Indian’s victory. Overwhelmed with joy, Gukesh called it the "best day of his life."
Despite his success, Gukesh remains humble, saying, “This is just the beginning. My goal is to reach the level of players like Magnus Carlsen.”
This victory caps off an incredible year for Gukesh, who also led India to a gold medal at the Chess Olympiad. With this historic achievement, he has cemented his place as a rising star in the chess world.
