Payton McNabb’s Journey: From Tragedy to Advocacy in Women’s Sports

 

At just 17, Payton McNabb's dream of becoming a college athlete was shattered during a high school volleyball match. A powerful spike by a transgender opponent left her with severe injuries that changed her life forever. Now 19, McNabb is sharing her story in the documentary Kill Shot: How Payton McNabb Turned Tragedy Into Triumph to raise awareness about safety in women’s sports.

 

“I hope my story prevents this from happening to even one more girl,” McNabb shared.

 

In 2022, during a routine match in North Carolina, McNabb and her teammates expressed concerns about competing against a transgender player but felt they had no voice. Tragically, the game ended with McNabb being struck in the head by a spiked ball, leaving her unconscious and severely injured.

 

The aftermath was devastating—McNabb suffered a traumatic brain injury, partial paralysis, and permanent vision loss on her right side. Memory issues, confusion, and constant pain became part of her daily life.

 

“This could have been avoided if my safety as a female athlete had been prioritized,” McNabb stated.

 

In April 2023, she testified before the North Carolina legislature in support of the Fairness in Women’s Sports Bill. Her powerful testimony contributed to passing a law banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports in North Carolina schools and colleges.

 

Despite receiving no apology from the player involved, McNabb remains focused on her advocacy. “I know what I’m saying is rooted in common sense,” she remarked confidently.

 

Her documentary features raw footage of the incident and interviews with her family, shedding light on her journey from heartbreak to becoming a voice for change.
