Thirteen people, including an officer of the Indian Navy, were killed when a naval speedboat carrying out engine trials hit against a passenger ferry. The ferry was Neel Kamal and was carrying over 100 passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The boat capsized at Butcher Island or Jawahar Dweep, 8.25 kilometers from the Gateway of India. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon.
Survivors told local media that ferry staff had not provided any instructions following the collision, leaving passengers to scramble to safety on their own.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced 200,000 rupees for the families of those thirteen people along with 50,000 rupees for the injured. He also offered condolences to the families of the victims of the incident, calling the incident saddening.
