Kumar Mangalam Birla: Why ₹1 Crore Isn’t Enough to Launch a Business Today
In a recent interview on Nikhil Kamath's podcast, Indian billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla emphasized that ₹1 crore is insufficient to start a business in today’s landscape. He believes the rising costs and competitive environment require significantly more investment for success.
Birla, who has lost his temper only 18 times in 29 years, highlighted that maintaining control and trust is crucial for effective management and delegation. He stated that the Aditya Birla Group only enters sectors where it aims to be a market leader.
Birla shared his perspective on the evolving nature of business, noting that as companies grow, management transitions from being a science to an art. He pointed out that larger businesses need more creativity to thrive since the easy opportunities are already taken. For him, creativity is central to entrepreneurship: “The most creative thing you can do is build or run a business.”
Regarding startups, Birla underscored the importance of trust in building customer relationships, recalling the success of his jewelry business when customers exchanged old gold. He acknowledged that while private equity and venture capital are effective funding sources, they require different skills.
Birla’s journey began at a young age, working alongside his father. He took over the Aditya Birla Group at 28 after his father's passing, feeling both relief and responsibility. He learned about business management from the ground up, starting on the factory floor.
He also spoke about the significance of family values, recalling his grandfather’s simple lifestyle despite his success. Birla encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue their passions and build strong teams, emphasizing the "soft power of consistency" in leadership.
In his view, corporate responsibility is essential, stating, “Giving back is not philanthropy; it’s something you ought to be doing.” He shared an inspiring story about a girl who benefitted from a scholarship through the Birla Foundation, illustrating the impact of their philanthropic efforts.
