20 years ago, a massive tsunami hit Thailand creating a huge destruction. The incident took away the lives of nearly 230,000 people. It took place on December 26, 2004. The survivors and the close ones of the victims of this tragedy visited mass graves and remembered their loss by lighting up candles across Southeast and South Asia in various ceremonies.

The incident was triggered by an earthquake of 9.1 magnitude. Around 1.7 million people were displaced, such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.

More than 170,000 people died in Indonesia alone. In India, hundreds gathered at Marina Beach in the southern city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu state.
