Nitish Reddy slams maiden Test Century

Nitish Reddy achieved his first Test century while Washington Sundar notched his fourth fifty, significantly aiding India's position at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Day 3. The duo stabilized the innings during the afternoon session, recovering from a precarious 221 for 7 to reach 348 before Lyon dismissed Washington. Following Jasprit Bumrah's quick exit, there was concern that Nitish might remain stranded in the 90s; however, Mohammed Siraj's support allowed the 21-year-old to reach his milestone.

Nitish experienced moments of tension as he approached the century, but overall, his innings was composed and effective, thwarting Australia's advances. His entry into the match came after a tumultuous opening half-hour where Rishabh Pant was dismissed while attempting an ambitious lap shot off Scott Boland, resulting in a catch for Nathan Lyon.

Ravindra Jadeja had previously showcased patience during his 51-ball stint, but Lyon outsmarted him with a well-placed delivery that trapped Jadeja leg before wicket for 17 runs.

Together, Nitish and Washington Sundar justified the selectors' controversial decisions with their resilient partnership. Nitish, having already recorded three scores in the 40s throughout the series, displayed remarkable confidence despite India's precarious situation. Washington also demonstrated determination, batting effectively against Pat Cummins and his team, reminiscent of his previous success in Australia when he scored 62 at the Gabba in 2021. He benefited from a dropped catch by Steve Smith in slips.

Nitish’s innings was aggressive yet calculated on a day favorable for batting. He avoided falling into the trap of playing risky shots against short deliveries from Cummins, having faced similar dismissals in Adelaide. Despite taking a ball to his glove, he maintained composure and confidence, executing drives against fast bowlers and attacking Lyon. A single risky moment occurred when he attempted a reverse sweep off Boland but otherwise remained controlled as he batted through the final session with his father anxiously watching from the stands.

Reaching his century required some effort as Lyon's extra bounce led to Washington's dismissal, and Cummins caught Bumrah at first slip — marking the first such dismissal of the match. Nitish spent 18 balls in the 90s before hitting a four off Boland to secure his century. Shortly after this achievement, play was halted due to bad light and subsequently rain, ending the day with India at 358 for 9, trailing Australia by 116 runs.
