Gautam Adani's Take on Work-Life Balance: "Biwi Bhaag Jayegi If You Overdo It!"
Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani shared a refreshing perspective on the much-debated topic of work-life balance and the controversial 70-hour workweek suggestion. Speaking about personal choices, Adani emphasized that balance is subjective and depends on individual preferences.
"Work-life balance isn't a one-size-fits-all concept," Adani remarked. "For some, spending four hours with family brings happiness, while others might need eight hours. But remember, if you spend too much time, biwi bhaag jayegi!" he quipped, drawing laughter.
Adani also highlighted the importance of living a simplified life by embracing mortality. "Life becomes straightforward when you understand it’s not permanent. Balance comes when you truly enjoy what you do, whether it’s work or family," he added.
The debate around work hours recently reignited after Infosys founder Narayana Murthy advocated for a 70-hour workweek, urging Indians to push harder to match global standards. Murthy argued that hard work is essential for the nation’s progress, especially when millions rely on subsidies due to poverty.
However, Adani's stance resonated with many who believe in a more individualized approach to work-life balance. Echoing similar sentiments, Emcure Pharmaceuticals’ Namita Thapar pointed out that long hours might be feasible for founders with a financial stake but are unrealistic for regular employees. Thapar stressed the need for fixed working hours to ensure fairness.
The debate continues, but Adani's witty remark has added a lighter, relatable touch to the conversation, sparking discussions on how individuals define balance in their lives.
