In August, a young Neha Sangwan stood in awe as Vinesh Phogat returned to Balali, Haryana, after the Paris Olympics. The midnight celebration inspired Neha, then 16, who had spent her day training tirelessly for the upcoming U17 World Championships in Jordan.
Hailing from the same village that produced wrestling icons like Geeta, Babita, and Vinesh Phogat, Neha is carving her path in the 57 kg wrestling category. With a family rooted in wrestling, Neha has already made a name for herself on the global stage. She claimed the Asian U15 championship in 2022 in the 54 kg category, before transitioning to 57 kg and securing bronze at the World Cadet Championships in Turkey that same year.
Her coach, Sajan Singh Mandola, praises her technical prowess and adaptability. “Neha’s moves, like Lohkan and Dhobhi, are sharp and precise. Her balance of speed and strength gives her an edge, especially against taller opponents in her weight class,” he explains. With plans to enhance her strength as she transitions to senior-level competitions, Neha’s potential looks limitless.
This year, Neha’s victories include an U17 World Championship title in Jordan and a bronze at the U20 World Championships in Spain. She’s only lost one international bout in the past year, showcasing her consistency and determination.
Neha’s father, Amit Sangwan, a former village sarpanch, is her biggest supporter. “Neha always aims for a medal, no matter the competition. Her focus is now on competing at the senior level and working toward an Olympic medal,” he shares proudly.
As Neha steps into the senior category in 2025, all eyes are on this rising star who’s ready to take Indian wrestling to new heights.
