Out-of-form all-rounder Mitch Marsh has been dropped from Australia's squad for the series-deciding fifth Test against India in Sydney, with Beau Webster set to make his debut. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc will retain his place despite dealing with a rib injury, joining Pat Cummins, Scott Boland, and Nathan Lyon in the bowling lineup. Captain Pat Cummins explained that Marsh's performance had not met expectations, prompting the decision for a change.
Cummins remarked, "Mitchy obviously hasn't quite got the runs or wickets he would have liked this series," adding that it was time for a "freshen up." He acknowledged Marsh's contributions to the team but felt it was an opportune moment for Webster to step in. Marsh has struggled throughout the series, recording low scores and failing to take wickets, which raised concerns about his future in Test cricket.
Webster, who has been a standout performer in domestic cricket with an impressive average of 57.1 and 81 wickets since March 2022, will become Australia’s 469th Test player. Cummins praised Webster's all-around capabilities and expressed excitement about his debut.
Despite the disappointment of being dropped, Marsh reportedly took the news well and remains a key player for Australia in white-ball formats. Cummins reassured that this decision does not mark the end of Marsh's Test career, emphasizing the team's strategy of rotating players based on form and fitness.
The match is set to begin on January 6 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where Australia aims to secure victory and clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
