Goa Tourism Minister vs Influencers
Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has publicly condemned social media influencers for allegedly "defaming" the state and claimed that some are being "paid" as part of a strategy to undermine its image. During a press conference, Khaunte addressed concerns over claims that tourist footfall has declined, asserting that Goa has actually seen an increase in domestic arrivals compared to last year.

Khaunte stated, "These influencers are paid to malign Goa," and emphasized that hotel occupancy rates in the state are high, with five- and four-star hotels nearing full capacity. He expressed confidence in the tourism sector's recovery, stating, "The season has been good, exceptional… and we expect 2025 will also be good for tourism."

He highlighted that the ongoing negative narratives about Goa are misleading and insisted that the state's natural beauty and offerings cannot be compared to other destinations like Thailand. Khaunte vowed to take action against those who spread false information about Goa, indicating that a plan is in place to expose such influencers.

In support of Khaunte's statements, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also criticized influencers for spreading incorrect messages about the state being "empty" during the holiday season. He invited them to visit Goa to witness the bustling tourist activity firsthand.

The minister's remarks come amid concerns about the impact of social media on Goa's reputation as a premier tourist destination, particularly following a surge of posts suggesting a downturn in tourism. Khaunte reiterated that Goa remains a favored location for both domestic and international tourists, and he called for unity in promoting the state's positive image.
