"OYO Updates Policy: Relationship Proof Now Required for Check-In"
OYO Introduces Relationship Proof for Hotel Check-Ins: New Guidelines Rolled Out in Meerut

OYO, one of India’s leading hotel booking platforms, has updated its check-in policies for partner hotels, requiring couples to present valid proof of their relationship during check-ins. The new rule, currently being enforced in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, marks a shift in the company’s guidelines to align with local societal norms and enhance safety measures.

The revised policy empowers partner hotels to accept or deny bookings based on their discretion and local sensibilities. While online bookings remain valid, unmarried couples will no longer be allowed to check in without appropriate documentation.

According to an OYO statement, the initiative aims to rebrand the platform as a safe and responsible choice for families, business travelers, and solo guests. It also seeks to promote longer stays and encourage repeated bookings.

To ensure compliance, OYO has partnered with local authorities and introduced nationwide programs, including seminars with hotel partners and police. Additionally, hotels involved in unauthorized activities or misuse of the OYO brand are being blacklisted.

The company acknowledged that feedback from civil society groups, particularly in Meerut, prompted the change. Similar demands have been raised by residents of other cities, advocating for stricter rules against allowing unmarried couples.

"We aim to balance personal freedoms with responsible hospitality practices," said Pawas Sharma, OYO’s Region Head for North India. "This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure it meets the needs of all stakeholders while maintaining safety and ethical standards."

Based on feedback from the Meerut rollout, OYO plans to expand the guidelines to other cities in the near future.
