Yograj Singh Questions Gambhir's Coaching Approach Amid Kohli's BGT Struggles
Former cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, has indirectly criticized Gautam Gambhir, suggesting his coaching style may have impacted Virat Kohli’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kohli, known for his class and consistency, struggled throughout the series, falling to deliveries outside the off-stump repeatedly. Excluding his unbeaten 100 in Perth, he managed just 90 runs across eight other innings.
Yograj believes Gambhir, as head coach, should have focused more on man-management rather than traditional coaching. "Exceptional players often need guidance and mental support, not just technical advice," he said. Yograj referenced Sunil Gavaskar’s commentary, where Gavaskar suggested Kohli should have followed Sachin Tendulkar’s approach from the Sydney 2004 Test by playing straighter.
Highlighting the gap between coaching and management, Yograj added, “Coaching is about identifying technical flaws, but managing is about knowing how to address these issues with players like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli.”
Kohli is expected to rest during the ODI series against England, with his next appearance likely in the Champions Trophy.
