Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal announced a new housing scheme aimed at sanitation workers employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). During a press conference, he urged the central government to allocate land at subsidized rates for this initiative, which the Delhi government would manage.
Kejriwal stated, "If the central government provides land at highly subsidized rates, then the Delhi government will construct houses on them, allowing government employees to pay in easy installments and become homeowners." He emphasized that the scheme would initially focus on sanitation workers, who often face housing challenges after retirement.
The proposed plan allows sanitation workers to purchase homes at reduced prices with repayment deducted from their salaries. Kejriwal expressed hope that this initiative would not only benefit sanitation workers but could later be extended to other government employees as well. He highlighted the urgency of addressing housing issues for these workers, many of whom struggle to secure stable accommodation post-retirement.
