On January 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, declaring the event open. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized India's determination to secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics, believing it would elevate the country’s sporting landscape.

“We are making every effort to bring the Olympics to India in 2036, which will open new doors for our athletes and the sports industry,” he stated. Modi highlighted that hosting the Olympics significantly boosts infrastructure and various sectors, benefiting athletes and the nation alike.

India had previously expressed its intent to host the 2036 Olympics during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Mumbai in 2023. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has already submitted an official expression of interest, though competition remains stiff, with Qatar and Saudi Arabia also vying for the opportunity.

Speaking to the athletes, Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting sports as a crucial part of national development. He acknowledged the role of coaches, trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and sports equipment manufacturers in building a robust sports ecosystem.

Calling the event a true reflection of "Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat," the Prime Minister also praised Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the people of the state for successfully organizing the National Games.
