Nissan Eyes New Tech Partner as Honda Deal Nears Collapse
Nissan Motor Co. is exploring new partnership opportunities as its talks with Honda Motor Co. for a joint holding company are likely to end, sources revealed. The disagreement reportedly stems from Honda’s proposal to acquire Nissan, which faced strong resistance within the company, along with concerns over investment levels.
Now, Nissan is shifting its focus toward finding a U.S.-based technology partner, aligning with its strategy to strengthen its presence in North America and accelerate advancements in electric and autonomous vehicles.
Meanwhile, Nissan’s stock saw an 8.7% surge in Tokyo trading, reflecting investor interest in the company’s future moves. A Nissan spokesperson declined to comment but stated that official updates on the Honda discussions would be shared by mid-February.
If the deal is officially called off, both companies can walk away without financial penalties, avoiding the hefty ¥100 billion ($657 million) cancellation fee outlined in their previous agreement.
