Bangladesh's Interim Government Initiates 'Operation Devil Hunt' Following Student Ultimatum

In response to a 24-hour ultimatum issued by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Bangladesh's interim government, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, launched "Operation Devil Hunt" on Saturday. The operation was initiated after activists were assaulted during an incident involving protesters at the residence of former Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque in Gazipur, near Dhaka. The government has deployed army troops to Gazipur, where the student organization was protesting the previous day's attacks. The Home Ministry announced that the operation, aimed at ensuring public safety, began in Gazipur and will expand nationwide. Details of the coordinated security measures, involving both the army and law enforcement agencies, are expected to be released on Sunday. Witnesses reported that locals and Awami League supporters assaulted activists during the incident at Haque's residence, resulting in several injuries. The student leaders claim their members were attempting to prevent looting at the house when they were attacked. Gazipur police stated that security personnel responded promptly, rescuing the students, with 15 admitted to a local hospital and some later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to critical injuries. Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury visited the hospital, assuring that all attackers would be apprehended and brought to justice. The officer-in-charge of Gazipur Sadar Police Station, Arifur Rahman, has been suspended for negligence of duty, according to the Daily Star newspaper. This incident is part of a broader wave of violence that erupted nationwide following a live online address by Sheikh Hasina, leading to attacks on her supporters' properties and significant unrest. The government has pledged to take stern action to restore order and prevent further violence.
