Trump Administration Halts Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Operations, Citing Oversight Concerns

The Trump administration has effectively shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency established after the 2008 financial crisis to safeguard consumers. Russell Vought, the newly appointed Director of the Office of Management and Budget, directed the CFPB to cease work on proposed rules, suspend the implementation of finalized but not yet effective regulations, and halt all investigative activities. Additionally, the CFPB's headquarters in Washington, D.C., will be closed from February 10 to 14. Vought also informed the Federal Reserve that the bureau would not request its next funding installment, labeling its current $711.6 million balance as excessive. Critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, argue that this move undermines consumer protections and benefits large financial institutions. The CFPB's website has been taken offline, displaying a "page not found" message.
