Ahilya Chandel: Japan’s Rising Cricket Star Joins Delhi Capitals in WPL
Delhi Capitals recently introduced Ahilya Chandel, sparking excitement in the cricketing world. The 21-year-old left-arm pacer has become the first Japanese player associated with the Women’s Premier League (WPL), joining the team as a net bowler. With the tournament set to begin soon, Chandel could make history by earning a spot in the squad if an opportunity arises.
Born to an Indian father, Chandel made her debut for Japan in 2022 and has since become the country’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, claiming 30 wickets in 32 matches at an economy of 4.58. She even etched her name in record books by taking a rare double hat-trick against China in the 2024 Asian Cricket Council Women's Premier Cup.
Her inclusion aligns with WPL’s rule of allowing one associate nation player among five overseas players in a team. With Delhi Capitals eyeing their first WPL title, all eyes will be on this promising talent as the tournament kicks off on February 15 against Mumbai Indians in Vadodara.
