Shikhar Dhawan’s Firm Stand: No Cricket With Pakistan Until Terrorism Ends

Former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has made it clear—national security should always come before cricket. His statement comes after the BCCI refused to send Team India to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, citing ongoing political tensions. As a result, India will play all their matches at a neutral venue in Dubai, forcing Pakistan to adopt a hybrid model for hosting its first ICC event in 30 years.

Cricket Can’t Ignore National Interests

Dhawan, who retired last year, believes that until terrorism is eradicated, India should not engage in cricket with Pakistan. “Cricket should never be placed above the country’s stand. Until terrorism ends, India shouldn’t play in Pakistan,” he told ANI.

This isn’t the first time India has declined to travel to Pakistan. In 2023, the Asia Cup also followed a hybrid format after India refused to play in the neighboring country. Despite the warm relations between Indian and Pakistani players, Dhawan emphasized that such decisions are beyond their control. “It’s up to the governments first, then the cricket boards. Players simply follow the decision taken at the top level,” he added.

Dhawan Named Champions Trophy 2025 Ambassador

Meanwhile, Dhawan has been announced as one of the four event ambassadors for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, alongside Pakistan’s 2017-winning captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, Australia’s Shane Watson, and New Zealand’s Tim Southee. The ambassadors will share insights throughout the tournament, which kicks off on February 19.

With political tensions dictating cricketing ties, all eyes are now on how the tournament unfolds with India playing on neutral ground.
