Israel to Maintain Presence in Southern Lebanon Despite Withdrawal Deadline
Despite pushback from Beirut and an impending deadline, the Israeli military has announced it will maintain troops in five "strategic points" along the southern Lebanese border. This decision follows concerns voiced by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun that a complete withdrawal by Israel would not be achieved.

According to Israeli military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, these locations are vital for defending Israeli residents and ensuring no immediate threat arises. Shoshani described the measure as temporary, stating it was approved by the United States-led body monitoring the ceasefire that began in late November. These strategic points either provide key vantage points or are situated across from communities in northern Israel.

President Aoun expressed apprehension that a complete withdrawal would not occur by the agreed-upon Tuesday deadline, vowing a unified national response. Lebanon's concerns highlight the delicate nature of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, especially after reports of attacks across Lebanon.

Initially set for a 60-day period, the Israeli army's withdrawal, coordinated with the deployment of the Lebanese army alongside UN peacekeepers, was extended to February 18. The Lebanese army, however, has stated it cannot fully deploy until Israeli forces completely withdraw. Israel has justified its continued presence by stating the Lebanese army has not deployed to all areas of southern Lebanon to ensure Hezbollah does not reestablish its presence in the area.
