PM Modi Advocates for Linguistic Unity Amidst Three-Language Policy Debate

Amid ongoing discussions between the central government and Tamil Nadu over the National Education Policy's (NEP) three-language mandate, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the harmonious coexistence of Indian languages. Speaking at the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Delhi, he stated that Indian languages have historically influenced and enriched each other without animosity. He urged society to reject divisive notions based on language and to embrace all languages as mainstream. The Prime Minister highlighted government initiatives promoting education in major languages, including Marathi, and efforts to shift away from the perception that English proficiency is a prerequisite for talent recognition. These remarks coincide with Tamil Nadu's resistance to the NEP's three-language formula, which the state perceives as an imposition of Hindi, conflicting with its longstanding two-language policy of Tamil and English.
