The Supreme Court on Monday reprimanded comedian Samay Raina for his comments made during a show in Canada concerning the ongoing controversy surrounding his program 'India's Got Latent'. Justice Surya Kant criticized the younger generation for being "oversmart" and warned that the court knows how to address such behavior.
The court was hearing a petition from podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, who faced significant backlash last month after making inappropriate remarks on Raina's show. These comments led to multiple complaints and a debate in Parliament.
During his 'Samay Raina Unfiltered' tour in Canada, Raina humorously addressed the controversy by thanking the audience for "paying my lawyer's fees." This remark did not sit well with the Supreme Court, leading to the recent admonishment.
In a related development, the Supreme Court has permitted Allahbadia to resume his podcast, 'The Ranveer Show', emphasizing the need to balance morality and freedom of expression. The court instructed that the content must adhere to standards of decency and morality suitable for all age groups.
The court also advised the central government to consider these aspects while formulating guidelines for digital content in light of the recent controversy.
