Ontario Imposes 25% Electricity Export Surcharge to U.S. in Response to Trump's Tariffs

Ontario Imposes 25% Electricity Export Surcharge to U.S. in Response to Trump's Tariffs
Ontario, Canada's largest province, has announced a 25% increase in electricity export tariffs affecting approximately 1.5 million American consumers in Minnesota, New York, and Michigan. This decision is a direct response to President Donald Trump's recent imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods and energy.
Premier Doug Ford stated that the new surcharge will take effect on Monday and emphasized his willingness to escalate measures further, including potentially cutting off electricity supplies entirely if the U.S. continues its tariff policies. He expressed concern for American citizens who are not responsible for the trade conflict, attributing the situation solely to President Trump.

The implementation of this surcharge is expected to generate daily revenues between CAD 300,000 and CAD 400,000 (approximately USD 208,000 to USD 277,000), which will be used to support Ontario's workers and businesses. Despite Trump's temporary suspension of some tariffs, Ford indicated that the surcharge would remain in place as it serves as a necessary countermeasure amid ongoing trade tensions.
