An international webinar titled “Responsible Approach to Cultural Tourism” will be held on Tuesday, March 11, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM IST. This event is part of the initiative “Documenting & Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Nagaland.”
Organized by Contact Base, a Kolkata-based organization focused on promoting inclusive and sustainable development through culture-based strategies, the webinar aims to foster global collaboration in cultural tourism. Contact Base has partnered with UN Tourism to support community-driven cultural tourism and is dedicated to preserving the living heritage of Nagaland.
In May 2024, Contact Base hosted a workshop in Mokokchung, focusing on the documentation of Nagaland’s living heritage. Over the past year, the organization has captured the essence of the Ao, Angami, Kuki, Konyak, and Chakhesang communities, documenting their lifestyle, cuisine, performing arts, weaving, and crafts across Mon, Mokokchung, Kohima, Dimapur, and Phek districts.
As part of this ongoing project, Contact Base will unveil its new website and mobile app at the end of March, offering information on cultural tours, homestays, and local experiences. This initiative is backed by the German Consulate General in Kolkata.
The webinar will feature Igor Stefanovic of UN Tourism, Spain, who will discuss “Cultural Tourism and Indigenous Leadership.” Additionally, five expert speakers will explore the theme of integrating intangible cultural heritage into tourism experiences.
The webinar agenda offers a comprehensive exploration of Nagaland’s vibrant cultural tourism offerings. Known for its deep-rooted traditions, festivals, crafts, music, and architecture, Nagaland stands as a premier cultural tourism destination. Both the Government of Nagaland and various stakeholders are actively promoting immersive cultural and eco-tourism experiences that emphasize sustainability and benefit local communities. By adopting a responsible, community-driven approach, Nagaland ensures that its traditions are authentically preserved while welcoming visitors.
Through heritage-conscious branding and innovative tourism strategies, Nagaland is strengthening its cultural identity, fostering local pride, and opening doors for global partnerships. With communities at the forefront of tourism efforts, cultural tourism transcends economic value—it becomes a tool for preserving heritage, nurturing creativity, and expanding cultural understanding on a global scale.
In the wake of COVID-19, tourism has evolved from extractive to regenerative models, focusing on the well-being of local communities. This shift promotes equitable collaborations, community-focused experiences, and ethical cultural consumption. Cultural tourism today seeks not only economic benefits but also aims to enhance the quality of life for host communities while providing visitors with authentic, enriching cultural encounters.
To promote discussions around the role of cultural tourism in sustainable development and community-led initiatives, this webinar will bring together experts from UN Tourism, the World Indigenous Tourism Alliance (WINTA), and key tourism stakeholders from Nagaland.
