Thailand plans to cut the maximum duration of visa-free stays for foreign tourists from 60 days to 30 days, as announced by Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong. The move, aimed at addressing the misuse of visa exemptions for unauthorized business activities, will affect passport holders from 93 countries who currently enjoy a two-month visa-free allowance.
The decision follows concerns raised by local travel organizations about illegal rentals and unauthorized work by foreigners. While the policy aims to prevent abuse, it may impact long-term tourists such as digital nomads and retirees. The implementation date is yet to be confirmed, with potential exemptions or transitional measures under consideration.
