The Indian Premier League (IPL) has eliminated the rule of suspending captains for three over-rate offences in a season, starting from IPL 2025. Instead, such violations will now result in fines and in-game field restrictions. However, sanctions imposed before the 2025 season, such as Hardik Pandya's suspension for Mumbai Indians' opening game on March 23 against Chennai Super Kings, will still be enforced.
The league has also adopted a new demerit points system aligned with the ICC Code of Conduct. Under this system, penalties issued by match referees—such as fines or warnings—will accumulate as demerit points on players' or team officials' records for up to 36 months. Accumulating enough points could lead to suspensions or stricter sanctions. This shift aims to modernize disciplinary measures while ensuring consistency with global cricket standards.
