Despite playing his first tournament at the elite level just four years ago (2021 Miami), Alcaraz is now tied for the eighth-most crowns in series history (since 1990) with Michael Chang and Alexander Zverev.

The Spaniard has consistently raised his level with Big Titles on the line. In championship matches at Big Titles events, Alcaraz has tallied an astonishing 11-2 record. His two defeats have come to Novak Djokovic, who has more Big Titles (72) than any player in history.

Alcaraz has succeeded at these tournaments at a historic level, earning more than one Big Title for every five of the events he has played (1 title per 4.5 events). Only Novak Djokovic (3.2), Rafael Nadal (3.5) and Roger Federer (4.4) are ahead of the Spaniard. The No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has won Big Titles at a rate greater than legends including Pete Sampras (4.9) and Andre Agassi (6.1).

Sinner was trying to narrow the gap with Alcaraz. Had the Italian won on home soil, he would have pulled to within one Big Title of his rival. Sinner had not lost a match since last year's Beijing final against Alcaraz.
