Israeli Airstrikes Hit Sanaa Airport as Response to Houthi Missile Attacks
Israel’s military announced on Wednesday, September 10, that its air force struck Houthi rebel sites in Yemen, hitting locations in the capital Sanaa and in the northern Al Jawf province. According to the Israel Defense Forces, the strikes targeted military camps, the Houthis’ media headquarters, and a fuel storage facility allegedly used by the group.

The Houthis, who hold power across much of northern Yemen, have repeatedly fired missiles and drones at Israel since the conflict in Gaza began, saying their attacks are acts of solidarity with Palestinians. Israel has responded with airstrikes against Houthi positions, extending the battlefield beyond Gaza.

The Houthi-run Al Masirah television channel confirmed that strikes took place but gave no immediate details. Israeli officials said the latest operation was a direct response to missile launches from Houthi-controlled territory. None of the recent launches toward Israel caused casualties or significant damage, officials added.

No reports of deaths or destruction from the Wednesday strikes had emerged by the evening.

This is not the first time Israel has struck Sanaa airport. On May 6, Israeli strikes destroyed the passenger terminal and inflicted heavy damage on the runway.

In recent days, Houthi activity has intensified. On Monday, September 8, Israel’s military intercepted a drone launched from Yemen after air raid sirens went off in Eilat. Later the same day, more alarms were triggered in the Negev desert during another attempted drone attack, although the military did not disclose its outcome.

Just a day earlier, a drone fired by Houthi rebels struck Ramon Airport near Eilat, damaging the arrivals hall and forcing flights to be briefly suspended. The facility has since reopened. The Houthis, backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they used three drones to strike Ramon Airport and other areas.

Since October 2023, the Houthis have carried out dozens of long-range missile and drone attacks directed at Israel. These operations have expanded the conflict hundreds of kilometers beyond Gaza, fueling concerns of a broader regional escalation.
