Nearly one in two Indian enterprises incorporate AI into strategic operations: Report
New Delhi, September 10 (PTI): A recent study has found that nearly half of Indian enterprises have already incorporated Artificial Intelligence into their IT and business strategies, placing the country among the global leaders in AI adoption.

The report, published by OpenText and Ponemon Institute, cautioned that despite this rapid growth, challenges such as weak data infrastructure and rising cyber risks could slow down India’s progress in maximising the benefits of AI.

According to the findings, 48 per cent of Indian enterprises have embedded AI into their operational and strategic frameworks, among the highest rates worldwide. However, only 15 per cent of organisations said they are confident in evaluating returns on investment linked to securing and managing the information required for AI initiatives. The survey gathered insights from nearly 1,900 senior IT and security executives globally, including 337 from India.

The report also noted that Indian businesses are ahead of global averages when it comes to digital transformation priorities. About 54 per cent of Indian companies identified digital transformation as a key focus area, compared with 44 per cent of global respondents. Still, obstacles such as the rising volume of unstructured data, security challenges, and gaps in governance frameworks continue to hinder responsible scaling of AI.

“India is rapidly establishing itself as a leader in AI adoption, with enterprises displaying strong intent and enthusiasm,” said Saurabh Saxena, Regional Vice President, OpenText India. He added that with 59 per cent of company boards and CEOs in India rating AI as highly important—well above levels in countries such as the UK and France—the ambition is clear. “The real opportunity lies in addressing information readiness gaps to leap ahead of global peers,” Saxena observed.

The study further showed that Indian organisations are more aware of AI-related risks compared to their global counterparts. For instance, 46 per cent of Indian respondents identified bias in AI models as a serious issue, compared with 32 per cent globally. Similarly, concerns over privacy breaches were raised by almost half of Indian leaders, highlighting a heightened sensitivity towards ethical and security dimensions of AI.
