Why 2016 was not a great year for Start-Ups despite PM Modi' push

It was a time in 2015, when 4-5 start-ups were incubating every day. But the year 2016 was not the same. The year, which saw the launch of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's StartUp India programme, not just witnessed the fall in number of start-ups but it also knocked by sharp closure of many promising start-ups in the country.

For most of the companies, lack of funds was the major concern while plummeting sales and rising competition were the other reasons. Here's the list of some top companies that saw a bad phase in the year 2016. 

1. TinyOwl - Food ordering Company

Reason for closure: Financial troubles, Copany plans to relaunch itself with new brand name

2. Dazo - Mobile App based food delivery service

Reason for closure: Company could not raise fresh rounds of funds

Started in 2015

 

3. PepperTap - An App based grocery delivery firm, 

Reason for closure: Stiff competition from rivals like Groffers and BigBasket

Started in 2014

 

4. Fashinara -  Bangalore based online retailing venture focussed on fashion and lifestyle

Reason for closure: Company could not raise fresh rounds of funds.

Started in 2012

5. Purple Squirrel - Mumbai based education-technology company 

Reason for closure: Fall in sale and lack of cash

Started in 2013

 

6. AskMe - Online search engine

Reason for closure: Severe cash crunch

Started in 2010

 

7. FranlyMe - Video micro blogging website

Reason for closure: Failed to grab market's attention

Started in 2014

 

8. GrocShop - Mumbai based grocery shopping website

Reason for closure:  failed to find a profitable growth model in a segment

9. AUTOnCAB - Gurgaon based auto rikshaw booking mobile app

Reason for closure: Stiff competition

Reason for closure: Not known
