Asia Cup Official Criticizes Suryakumar Yadav's Indian Side for Avoiding Handshakes with Pakistan, Says Politics Entering Sports
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, Mohsin Naqvi, voiced strong criticism of India’s approach following their Group A clash against Pakistan in the Asia Cup held in Dubai. Taking to X (earlier known as Twitter), Naqvi condemned the Indian team for refusing to exchange handshakes with their rivals, calling the act contrary to the values of fair play and sportsmanship.

India, captained by stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, cruised to a commanding seven-wicket win after chasing down Pakistan’s 128-run total in just 15.5 overs. The contest carried a charged atmosphere as it came soon after the terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 Indian tourists lost their lives in an assault linked to militants based in Pakistan.

The controversy first surfaced when Suryakumar Yadav declined to shake hands with Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha at the toss. Matters escalated when the Indian players chose not to step out for the customary post-match greetings, leaving the Pakistani cricketers waiting outside their dressing room.

At the press conference following the game, Suryakumar defended his team’s stance. He remarked, “Certain things in life stand above sporting gestures. Our thoughts are with the victims of the Pahalgam tragedy and their families. We dedicate this victory to the brave soldiers who carried out Operation Sindoor.” He emphasized that the emotional impact of the attack had weighed heavily on the squad, shaping their decision.

However, social media reactions were divided, with some pointing out that Suryakumar had previously shaken hands with Salman Agha and Mohsin Naqvi during the pre-tournament captains’ meet for the Asia Cup 2025 trophy launch in Dubai.

On the cricketing front, India remained clinical despite the off-field tensions. Kuldeep Yadav delivered a stunning spell of wrist spin that dismantled Pakistan’s batting order and earned him the Player of the Match award. Suryakumar then guided the chase with an assured unbeaten knock of 47 runs from 37 balls, steering India to a comfortable win.
