Officials confirmed on Monday that minor volcanic activity was observed twice this month at Barren Island, India’s only active volcano. The eruptions occurred on September 13 and September 20 and were considered mild, posing no immediate danger to nearby areas, according to PTI.
Barren Island is situated in the Andaman Sea, approximately 138 kilometers northeast of Port Blair, and is the only active volcano in South Asia. The island covers about three square kilometers and is mostly dominated by volcanic cones and ash, with limited vegetation visible from afar. Rising 354 meters above sea level, it remains a notable geological landmark in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The volcano has a documented history of eruptions dating back to 1787 and has experienced multiple episodes since then. Significant eruptions occurred in 2017 and 2022, with the most recent activity recorded in July this year.
