Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy challenged statements made by former US President Donald Trump regarding which countries were funding Russia’s war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy noted that India has largely supported Ukraine, although he acknowledged that energy-related issues remain a concern. He also expressed optimism about bringing the conflict to an end as soon as possible. His remarks came after Trump’s hour-long speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly, in which the American leader described India and China as major contributors to Russia’s war efforts.
Zelenskyy addressed the challenges that lie ahead, expressing confidence in Trump’s ability to handle them. He stated that efforts should be made to ensure India does not step back and suggested that the country might reconsider its stance on Russian energy. He also expressed hope that India would adjust its approach toward energy deals with Russia.
In addition, Zelenskyy commented on Iran, saying that the country would never align with Ukraine or the United States. He emphasized that strengthening ties with Europe and India could influence New Delhi’s position. He highlighted the importance of building closer and stronger relationships with India alongside European partners.
Zelenskyy added that his recent discussion with Trump had been positive. He noted that Trump had shown strong support for Ukraine and shared the desire to end the war quickly, reflecting the wishes of the Ukrainian people. He also mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is aware that he is not winning, yet continues to claim victory publicly.
Earlier, on August 28, Peter Navarro, a senior advisor to Trump, stated that achieving peace in Ukraine partially depends on India, referring to New Delhi’s potential role in the conflict. Weeks before, after a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Zelenskyy had expressed that Kyiv was counting on India’s contribution to help bring the war with Russia to an end
