During his address regarding the recent decisions by several countries to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that these moves could fuel acts of terrorism targeting Jewish communities and innocent people worldwide.
As he delivered his speech, opposition voices were audible, while support came primarily from representatives of the United States and the United Kingdom. Many seats in the assembly remained unoccupied, with Iran’s empty spots replaced by a display of photographs of children Tehran claims were killed during Israel’s military actions in June.
Netanyahu accused his critics of harboring antisemitic views, saying that antisemitism is persistent and never fully disappears.
Facing increasing international isolation and criticism, Netanyahu used the platform to frame Gaza as part of a broader regional conflict. He highlighted Israel’s recent military operations aimed at neutralizing threats from Iran, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, claiming these actions have created opportunities for regional stability. He also mentioned that Israel has initiated discussions with Syria to establish security arrangements with Damascus’ new administration. According to him, the ultimate goal remains the elimination of Hamas.
Throughout his address, Netanyahu frequently acknowledged the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, describing him as a key ally in Israel’s political and security strategies.
Netanyahu noted that the speech was partially broadcast via audio speakers to reach Hamas leaders and hostages held since the October 7, 2023, attack. He reassured the hostages that Israel has not forgotten them. His office later claimed that the Israeli military accessed phones in Gaza, including those of Hamas members, to ensure they heard his message. However, Palestinians in Gaza reported that they did not hear the broadcast, and there were no immediate confirmations of phone hacking.
