Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby districts due to the expectation of very heavy rainfall on Sunday, September 28. Areas under the alert include Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, where intense and continuous rain is possible in some locations. Sindhudurg and the hilly regions of Nashik are also likely to experience significant rainfall.
The IMD has noted that the Konkan region and adjoining parts of northern Maharashtra are likely to encounter severe weather, while other parts of the state, including central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha, are expected to see only light showers during this time.
In response to the forecast, the State Emergency Operation Centre has instructed all district authorities to remain on high alert until September 30. Officials have highlighted potential risks including urban flooding in low-lying areas of Mumbai and Konkan districts, landslides in hilly regions, and the possibility of flash floods.
Authorities have ordered control rooms to operate continuously, deployment of water-lifting pumps, close supervision of river flows and dam release levels, and pre-positioning of repair teams along with disaster response equipment such as chain saws and power units.
