Tourism Ministry Teams Up With Netflix to Showcase India's Scenic Destinations
Ministry of Tourism Partners With Netflix to Promote India’s Scenic and Cultural Destinations

The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has announced a collaboration with Netflix aimed at showcasing India’s rich cultural and natural diversity through on-screen storytelling. The initiative will highlight destinations featured in Netflix productions and encourage viewers to explore India’s landscapes, traditions, and local communities.

How the Collaboration Will Work

Under the partnership, the Ministry and Netflix will identify opportunities to feature Indian locations in upcoming productions, ensuring that they are portrayed authentically and in context. The MoT has emphasized the importance of reflecting the history, local practices, and economic significance of these destinations to nearby communities.

Several existing Netflix titles already provide glimpses of India’s varied geography, including the Nilgiri forests in The Elephant Whisperers, the Andaman Islands in Kaala Paani, the fields of Punjab in Amar Singh Chamkila, the streets of Rajasthan in Mismatched, and the hills of Kalimpong in Jaane Jaan.

Globally, films and television shows have a track record of inspiring viewers to visit the locations they see on screen. Series such as Emily in Paris have led to increased interest in the featured destinations, and Netflix productions like When Life Gives You Tangerines have shown similar effects. The platform will now serve as a medium to encourage audiences to explore India.

Netflix’s Global Collaborations With Tourism Boards

Netflix has previously partnered with tourism boards and government agencies in countries including France, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, and Greece to highlight filming locations. The Ministry of Tourism noted that this is Netflix’s first partnership with a tourism body in South Asia.

Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content at Netflix India, said the collaboration would create opportunities for local talent and communities while telling stories rooted in India’s diverse landscapes. Over the past decade, Netflix has filmed in more than 100 cities across 23 states, covering small towns, forests, and urban centers. Many of these locations have since attracted both domestic and international tourists due to their cinematic appeal.

By linking tourism promotion with global storytelling, the Ministry of Tourism aims to strengthen India’s position as a compelling travel destination and showcase the country’s natural and cultural richness to audiences worldwide.
