Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife appeals to President Murmu for his release
Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has written to President Droupadi Murmu urging her to ensure the unconditional release of her husband. Wangchuk was detained and shifted to Jodhpur on charges of allegedly provoking violent demonstrations in Ladakh.
In her letter, Angmo expressed concern that a “full-scale witch hunt” had been carried out against Wangchuk for the last month, while covert attempts had been made over the past four years to weaken his spirit and silence the causes he has been advocating.
She questioned whether it could be considered a crime to speak on issues such as climate change, retreating glaciers, education reforms, and grassroots innovation. Angmo further highlighted that Wangchuk has been peacefully raising his voice in a Gandhian manner for the upliftment of Ladakh’s ecologically sensitive tribal region and that such efforts cannot be treated as a threat to national security.
Appealing directly to President Murmu, she noted that as someone belonging to a tribal background, the President would be able to understand the sentiments of the people of Leh and Ladakh more closely than anyone else.
Angmo called on the President’s “wisdom and good sense” as the Head of State to intervene in what she described as a chaotic situation. She emphasized that the principles of equity, justice, and conscience must prevail and requested the unconditional release of Wangchuk.
She added that Wangchuk has dedicated his life to serving the people of Ladakh and has consistently stood in support of the Indian Army in safeguarding the nation, insisting that he could never pose a threat to the country.
