‘Something I Aspire To’: Shubman Gill Hails Rohit Sharma for Leadership Qualities
Ahead of the second Test between India and West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, India’s captain Shubman Gill opened up about his relationship with Gautam Gambhir and shared insights on the outgoing captain Rohit Sharma.
“Our relationship is really good. It’s very simple, actually. We always try to have conversations about how to make players feel secure and what combinations we can play,” Gill said. He added that the team aims to work with a core squad of 15 to 18 players, constantly rotating and giving opportunities from that pool.
Gill highlighted his discussions with Gambhir, which primarily focused on nurturing fast bowlers. “India already has a strong group of pacers, but it’s important to keep identifying and training new talent,” he explained. The goal, according to Gill, is to ensure these bowlers get adequate opportunities, especially on overseas tours in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
Having replaced Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain for the upcoming Australia tour, Gill reflected on what he has learned from the veteran. “There are so many qualities I inherited from Rohit bhai. The calmness he brings and the friendships he fosters within the team are things I aspire to. These are the qualities I want to carry forward,” he said.
Gill also emphasized that Team India must always uphold its standards regardless of the opposition. “When you play for India, external motivation isn’t needed to raise your intensity. It doesn’t matter if it’s West Indies, Bangladesh, Australia, or England,” he added.
