India has made it clear that any world map proposed under a United Nations initiative must accurately represent the country's sovereign territory, including the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The Ministry of External Affairs said that any representation inconsistent with India's official map would be unacceptable. On Sunday, September 6, 2026, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India's position came in response to questions regarding a proposed world map linked to a recent UN General Assembly resolution. According to Jaiswal, India supported the resolution two days earlier because its objective is to encourage the use of equal area map projections. Such projections are intended to provide a more accurate comparison of the relative sizes of different continental landmasses. However, he clarified that the UN resolution does not approve or officially recognise any specific world map. It also does not deal with matters of political cartography, such as international borders, disputed territories or the names used for geographical locations. The resolution was sponsored by Togo and received support from 164 countries. Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine abstained from the vote, while the United States was the only country to vote against it. Jaiswal reiterated India's established position on the matter, stating that the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity remain clear, consistent and non negotiable. The MEA spokesperson further emphasised that India's Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh must be shown according to the official map of India. Any depiction that is inaccurate or could create a misleading impression would not be accepted by New Delhi.
