The death toll from the PG hostel building collapse in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan has reached six, as rescue teams continue searching through the debris. Officials said one more person rescued during the overnight operation was later declared dead. So far, 11 people have been rescued, while around 30 to 50 students are believed to be trapped beneath the collapsed structure. A newly surfaced CCTV recording from across the road has captured the moments before the five storey Hostel Daze building collapsed, showing a shopkeeper sitting outside his shop shortly before the incident. As the structure suddenly gave way and a huge cloud of dust spread across the area, the man quickly left his shop and managed to escape. The nearly 50 year old building was being used as a boys’ PG hostel and collapsed at around 1:30 pm on Sunday while repair work was reportedly underway on the ground floor. Police said renovation activity was taking place when the structure suddenly came down. Local residents claimed that rainwater had accumulated in the basement after several days of rainfall, raising concerns that the foundation may have been weakened. Police have registered an FIR against the owner, Hariram, and others over charges including culpable homicide, negligence in maintaining the structure and endangering public safety. Southwest Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Surender Chaudhary confirmed that six people have died in the incident and said 11 individuals had been rescued so far. Authorities initially feared that between 30 and 50 students could be trapped under the rubble, with some reportedly making phone calls from beneath the debris to seek help. Ten injured people were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, according to the hospital. Two National Disaster Response Force teams consisting of around 70 personnel, along with a canine squad, were deployed at the site to assist with the search operation. Oxygen cylinders were also lowered into parts of the debris to help people who might still be trapped underneath. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, CATS and Civil Defence were involved in the rescue efforts, while local residents also joined the operation by helping clear the rubble with their hands and available tools.
