At least 10 people have died and around 60 others were injured after fireworks exploded during a village festival in central Mexico, local authorities said. The incident took place in Santa Maria Canchesda, located in the Temascalcingo municipality. Videos from the event showed participants carrying a straw bull figure with fireworks attached to it as part of a traditional local celebration held on Saturday. According to reports, the burning bull appears to have set off a larger stockpile of fireworks kept inside the village church. The resulting explosion damaged walls and triggered a fire in the town’s main square. Local media said several people may have become trapped beneath debris after parts of the structure collapsed. The diocese of the nearby Atlacomulco municipality confirmed that two priests were hurt in the incident. Both are reportedly expected to recover. The diocese expressed condolences to those who lost their lives and their families, while also offering prayers for the injured and others affected by the tragedy. Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office said investigators have launched an inquiry into the incident. Officials added that the precise cause of the explosion remains unknown. Accidents involving fireworks have caused fatalities in Mexico before. In July 2018, a fireworks factory explosion in Tultepec, north of Mexico City, claimed the lives of 24 people.
