Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market, with the company widely expected to reveal its first foldable iPhone at its September 9 launch event. Reports suggest the device could be marketed under the name “iPhone Ultra.”
The foldable handset is expected to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series and new Apple Watch models. Its arrival would mark Apple’s first major entry into a segment already dominated by Samsung, Google and other Android smartphone makers.
Ahead of Wednesday’s event, leaks have offered possible details about the device’s design, specifications, charging features, pricing and potential release schedule.
Slimmer foldable design
The alleged iPhone Ultra is expected to use a book-style folding design. Rumours suggest it could measure around 4.5mm in thickness when unfolded, potentially making it one of Apple’s slimmest devices.
The phone is reportedly set to feature two displays: a 7.8-inch folding screen on the inside and a 5.5-inch cover display on the outside. Leaks have also pointed to a redesigned hinge, rounded edges and a display designed to minimise the visible crease.
In terms of appearance, the device is said to resemble Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, although Apple could opt for more rounded corners.
YouTuber Unbox Therapy has also showcased alleged dummy units sourced from China, offering a closer look at the reported design. The rear camera arrangement is said to share some similarities with Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold, with two cameras reportedly positioned on the back.
Under the hood, the foldable iPhone is expected to be powered by Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip, potentially delivering flagship-level performance. A dual-camera setup is also reportedly in development.
Other leaks have focused on the phone’s physical controls. Accessory manufacturer Benks has reportedly listed cases designed for the alleged iPhone Ultra, while leaker Instant Digital has claimed that Apple could place the volume controls along the top edge rather than on the side.
