Chinese authorities have acknowledged the difficulties facing rescue teams because of the region's numerous glaciers, glacial lakes, geological risks and unpredictable weather conditions.
In Nepal, rescue workers were continuing efforts to locate hundreds of people reported missing from hydropower projects. Heavy machinery was being used to remove debris from tunnels and other damaged areas.
The disaster has raised an important question for countries pursuing ambitious infrastructure plans in the Himalayas. Experts believe governments may need to take greater care when deciding where projects should be built, how large they should be and how they can withstand increasingly unpredictable natural events.
There are also calls for countries sharing the Himalayan region to cooperate more closely on disaster monitoring and early warning systems. Such cooperation could help authorities identify common risks and respond more effectively when emergencies occur.
