Iran has criticised Canada for backing U.S.-led efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Ottawa of showing “strategic confusion” and giving in to U.S. pressure.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Canada was choosing to support Washington despite recent tensions between the two countries. He also questioned Ottawa’s decision to cooperate with U.S.-led efforts to restore navigation through the strategic waterway.

The remarks followed Canada’s criticism of Iran’s actions in the Middle East and its pledge to maintain pressure on Tehran through sanctions and cooperation with international partners.

Baghaei argued that Canada could not claim to support peace, freedom of navigation and international law while backing U.S. military actions in the region.

He also pointed to recent tensions between Canada and the U.S., including the collapse of trade talks and the introduction of retaliatory tariffs.

Iran has similarly criticised other U.S. allies, including South Korea, over their potential involvement in efforts related to the Middle East conflict.
