Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol Wins Back Customers as Investors Turn Their Focus to Profit Margins

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol is approaching his second anniversary at the helm of the coffee chain after successfully bringing customers back to its stores, but investors are now looking for stronger profit margins from the turnaround.

The company’s Back to Starbucks strategy has required significant spending, putting pressure on margins. For Niccol, the next two years could be crucial in determining whether the recovery in customer demand can be converted into the sustainable profits investors are seeking.

When Niccol became CEO in September 2024, Starbucks had recorded three straight quarters of declining comparable sales. The company was facing customer dissatisfaction linked to long wait times, ineffective promotions and an increasingly complicated menu.

Sales continued to decline for another three quarters after Niccol took charge. The situation then began to improve, with comparable sales increasing 7.9 percent in the fiscal third quarter ended June 28. This represented the fourth consecutive quarter of improvement.

Niccol has chosen to focus heavily on customer experience rather than pursuing immediate margin gains. Starbucks has therefore invested hundreds of millions of dollars in additional staffing to shorten waiting times and in store upgrades designed to restore the coffeehouse atmosphere that helped establish the company as a global brand.

Niccol had previously built a reputation as an executive focused on strengthening consumer brands. His leadership helped revive sales at another company following a food safety crisis, further strengthening that reputation.

At Starbucks, he has also placed greater emphasis on marketing. The company recently promoted its products through a placement in the movie The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Investors initially reacted strongly to Niccol’s appointment. Starbucks shares jumped 24 percent on the day his hiring was announced. Since then, the stock has gained about 30 percent. That performance trails the roughly 40 percent rise in the broader S&P 500 index, but Starbucks has still performed better than some major competitors, including McDonald’s.

Jake Dollarhide, CEO of Longbow Asset Management and a Starbucks investor, said customer satisfaction remains more important than individual stock measurements. He said he had been doubtful about the turnaround as recently as six months ago, but changed his view after seeing improvements in service times.

The progress has nevertheless come with substantial costs. Starbucks has spent at least $500 million on labor investments as part of the restructuring, contributing to weaker operating margins since Niccol took over.

LSEG data showed that Starbucks had an operating margin of 12.9 percent in the fiscal third quarter. That compares with 15.8 percent during the same quarter two years earlier.

The decline has been even more pronounced in North America, Starbucks’ largest market. Operating margin there fell to 13.6 percent from 21 percent over the same comparison period.

The challenge for Niccol now is to maintain the gains in customer traffic and service while finding ways to control costs and rebuild profitability. Investors will increasingly judge the turnaround not only by whether customers return, but also by whether Starbucks can turn that recovery into stronger financial results.
