The European Commission has proposed a new framework for short term rental platforms as several popular tourist destinations continue to deal with housing shortages.

The plan is designed to bring greater consistency to rules across European countries. Cities such as Paris, Barcelona and Venice have already introduced different measures to control short term holiday rentals, leading to disagreements and legal challenges.

Under the proposed framework, local authorities would be able to introduce restrictions in areas facing serious housing pressure. However, such measures would need to be supported by evidence and targeted at specific locations rather than being applied broadly.

The European Commission says the approach is intended to help cities manage housing problems while providing clearer rules for rental platforms and local communities. The proposal still requires approval from EU countries and the European Parliament.
