Rock band Nirvana will receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27.
The honour recognises the band's major influence on music videos and popular culture. Nirvana made its MTV Video Music Awards debut in 1992 and went on to receive five awards during the early 1990s, including recognition for Best Alternative Video and Best New Artist.
The announcement comes more than three decades after the band's first appearance at the ceremony. Surviving members Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic have reunited for special performances on several occasions in recent years.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on CBS and MTV.
