Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz has called for a different approach to the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence economy, warning that technological progress alone will not guarantee that people broadly benefit from AI.
In an analysis published on September 12, Stiglitz argued that AI could significantly increase productivity and create a period of greater economic abundance. However, he said the transition could also bring major challenges if companies and governments fail to prepare for changes in employment, competition and income distribution.
One of his main concerns is the possibility that AI could eliminate or reduce demand for some jobs faster than new opportunities are created. He questioned whether the new jobs emerging from the AI economy will be sufficient in number and provide good enough incomes for workers affected by automation.
Stiglitz also raised concerns about the growing concentration of wealth and economic power among major technology companies. He argued that competition policies will be important to prevent a small number of companies from gaining excessive control over the AI industry.
Another major part of his proposal is stronger regulation. According to Stiglitz, governments need rules that make technology companies more accountable for the social effects of their systems while still allowing useful innovation to continue.
He also warned about wider problems connected with AI, including misinformation, deepfakes, privacy concerns and declining public trust. As AI tools become cheaper and more capable, producing misleading content could become easier, creating additional challenges for governments and society.
Stiglitz believes the productivity created by AI should ultimately be used to improve people's quality of life. He argues that investment should also support areas such as education, caregiving and other socially important work.
His broader argument is that governments should not simply react to the effects of AI after they appear. Instead, economic and regulatory policies should be designed alongside technological development so that the benefits of AI are distributed more widely across society.
